A home and business is a dream for many of us. Who would not want to find a property in a fabulous location with lots of characterful outbuildings that you could convert into gorgeous holiday accommodation?Throw in the upheaval of needing to thoroughly renovate said property as well and most of us would probably find we were having a sort of nervous breakdown and our dream was fast turning into a nightmare.
Not so for Steph and Ryan Lothian, who embraced this exact challenge at Williamstone Farm with a raw enthusiasm and sense of adventure that I have very rarely seen in all my years of writing about property and design. It could be a result of their many years of experience: building a house on a very sloping site in the Borders as a young couple and then renovating a series of high end properties in Edinburgh. Many people might have become jaded by now, but Steph and Ryan knew they had another project in them and when they saw Williamsone Farm on the outskirts of the pretty coastal town of North Berwick they knew it was meant for them. Both retired from the police at a relatively young age, they have been able to pour their expertise and knowledge into this property. They engaged the innovative Studio LBA as their architect, who pushed the envelope with their design ideas, adding Corten steel window frames and a glass corridor to the farm buildings and interior designer Rachel Richmond to help them with the interior finishes. Rachel’s practice, Hen & Crask specialises in helping clients achieve a really individual result, perfectly tailored to their personal taste and style.Steph wanted a slightly industrial edge to her airy and contemporary home and chose cool, quirky details like this spider pendant light fitting for a highly individual finish
The farm buildings all have a slightly more rustic finish, with chunkier details that really show off the history of the buildings.
Steph and Ryan really pull out all the stops for their guests, but to be honest, it is hard to go wrong with a holiday in North Berwick. If you like golf, beaches, mooching round independent shops in a pretty coastal town, ice cream, eating out and find the idea of a half hour train ride into the magnificent city of Edinburgh appealing – book now!
And very, very excitingly you can find out more about Steph and Ryan and their fabulous home on Scotland’s Home of the Year, a new TV series that airs on Wednesday evenings at 8pm on BBC Scotland starting this week!!
