The sofa

The focal point for the home. Probably the most prominent piece of furniture you will buy, the most important being your bed in terms of the amount of time you spend in it and the affect it can have on your health.

Your sofa does not need to be expensive, there are bargains galore on eBay and Gumtree. However it does need to be right: it needs to suit the scale of the room, plus, it needs to suit your interior style and go with the rest of your decor.

A lovely example of a Boho sofa…

It needs to be practical – do you have dogs, cats, kids or visitors? But please do not make it too practical – it needs to be beautiful as well! Oh and comfortable – an uncomfortable sofa is NOT like an uncomfortable car – a car’s purpose is to get you from A to B, it can do that successfully and not be comfortable, whereas, a sofa’s purpose is to BE comfortable – oh and beautiful and stylish!! So not that hard!!

My personal favourite: Coastal….

When I created my Interior Design Toolkit I planned a section on sofas, but did not include it in the end. I decided to stick to rooms for the time being, wanting to give timeless advice and felt sofa options might date. However, on reflection, they have not dated yet so I thought I would share them with you now! I have selected a sofa image for each of the styles that I cover in the kit…

Contemporary…
Global…
Fusion style hints at exotic oriental locations…

Clearly this fab example of Industrial chic is a choice that would benefit from being used against a wall and a generous selection of cushions! But I love the simple lines that this sofa follows…

Love the gentle, warm metallic hue of this Luxe style sofa…

Rock & Roll… Anything goes!
Retro style is so cute and lovable

Rustic styling is gentle with an emphasis on texture over colour.

Whatever sofa you choose make sure it fits your personal style and is beautiful, comfortable and not TOO practical!!

I hope you found this post inspiring?
